Bicholim is a small city located in North Goa. It is also a headquarters of the Bicholim district. Bicholim forms the Novas Conquistas or new conquests, along with six other areas. These areas were added to the territory of Goa relatively later. The district is known as the mining center of Goa. The region is also known for its traditional handicrafts. Bicholim is sometimes referred to as the educational and cultural center of north Goa.
Attractions: Though devoid of beaches that make up most of the tourism in Goa, Bicholim makes up with its tranquil and scenic environs. It is a tourist spots in its own right and is quite popular among locals and foreign tourists. The major tourist attractions in Bicholim are - Mayem Lake: This beautiful lake is a perfect spot for a quiet vacation amidst scenic surroundings. The lake is surrounded by hills and offers boating facilities. There are provisions for accommodation including cottages of Goa Tourism Development Corporation ( GTDC).
The Arvalem caves: This ancient rock cut caves date back to the 5th century AD. They are called the 'Pandava caves' and are associated with the legendary Pandavas of The Mahabharata.
Arvalem Waterfalls: Located near the Arvalem caves, these waterfalls are a must visit sight in Bicholim.
Wednesday Market: Every Wednesday, the main market area comes alive with people from far and wide arriving to strike a bargain. On offer is an amazing variety of goods.
Handicrafts: Bicholim is one of the cities in Goa known for its local crafts. These are made from sea shells, brass, and terracotta, and include a variety of items like small mirrors, dolls, wall hangings and Chandeliers.
Saptokoteshwar temple: Located in Narve village, it is a revered temple dedicated to Saptokoteshwar, an incarnation of Lord Shiva.
How to Reach: Air: Dabolim is the nearest airport from Bicholim.
Railway: The Mayem railway station is the nearest rail link.
Road: Bicholim is 35 kilometers from Panaji. There relevant authorities' regular bus services from Panaji and Mapusa to Bicholim. Motorbike taxis, and auto rickshaws are useful for traveling into the interiors.
